Fortescue Metals Group Ltd., Australia’s third-largest iron ore exporter, suspended work on a railroad carrying the steelmaking ingredient, signaling a deepening slump in demand from Chinese customers.
Contractor NRW Holdings Ltd. was told to stop building the line in Western Australia, Perth-based NRW said today in a statement. Cameron Morse, a spokesman for Fortescue, referred to an Oct. 28 statement that said “expansion expenditure costs have been identified and deferred.”
Mining companies may delay $50 billion of projects as credit markets seize up and metal prices plummet, Credit Suisse Group AG said last month. Contract iron ore prices may drop 50 percent next year, the first decline in seven years, Australia & New Zealand Banking Group Ltd. predicted last week.

One of the biggest planned mergers in corporate history, between mining groups BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto, was scrapped yesterday after a year of preparation, in a move that spread further gloom about the state of the global economy.
The hostile takeover by BHP was once worth $140bn (£92bn) but the collapse in commodity prices and turmoil in the financial markets had already halved the value of it before the London-listed group pulled the plug.
Shares in BHP rose 15% to £11.20 but those of Rio fell almost 40% to £15.75. Marius Kloppers, BHP’s chief executive, said a “compelling” case for merging the world’s second- and third-largest iron ore producers after Vale of Brazil had unravelled as a result of outside forces, including demands from regulators that assets would have to be sold.
“Recent global events and associated falls in commodity prices have … altered risk dimensions. BHP Billiton is very focused on balance sheet strength. Accordingly, the greater debt exposure of the combination plus the difficulty of divesting assets have increased the risks to shareholder value to an unacceptable level,” he said. (more…)

The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index, which covers both A and B shares, edged up 9.17 points, or 0.49 percent, to 1,897.88 points.
The key index has risen more than 8 percent since Nov 9, when the government announced the four-trillion-yuan ($585.7 billion) stimulus package.
The Shenzhen Component Index was up 0.69 percent to 6,533.87 points.
Gainers outnumbered losers by 504 to 313 in Shanghai and by 455 to 241 in Shenzhen. Combined turnover was 60.88 billion yuan.
Shares of steel makers gained, buoyed by news that BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company, would abandon its bid for rival Rio Tinto.
